Turning Public Transit Into A Library

By Michael Lithgow, June 5, 2007 Comments (1)

The London Book Project wants London commuters to read literature. Most especially, they want London commuters to read literature rather than those crap-filled "free" dailies that are given away in the subway systems of most urban centers.

Fifteen journalists have come together to distribute thousands of books into the London tram system over a two week period. Commuters are encouraged to pick the books up wherever they find them, read them, and exchange them. The organizers hope to turn the London subway system into a giant free library.

Sounds like a great idea that should be copied wherever "free" dailies are distributed.

what a great idea. As someone who is also involved in highlighting the negative impact of freesheet newspapers (from an environmental standpoint) I applaud what the LondonBookProject is doing.

On Wednesday June 13th we're taking to the streets ourselves. We'll be spending the day on the tubes, buses and streets of London collecting discarded newspapers destined for landfill. We're starting at Liverpool Street at 10am and then finishing at Traflagar Square at 7pm for the grand finale. Come join us!
