Bush Firing Range

ALISON JACKSON | Bush Firing Range | British artist Jackson has gained notoriety for her skilled framing of look-alike politicians and celebretrons in compromising positions, such as the one above. Others include Elton John receiving an enema in a hotel room from a nurse and the infamous 1999 image of Princess Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed posing with a mixed-race baby. Her new book, Confidential, published by Taschen, has recently hit the shelves in North America.

Xu Zhen - 186cm of Mt Everest

Xu Zhen | Maverick of the Chinese art scene, Xu Zhen has claimed to shave off the top 186cm of Mount Everest, and is touring the hunk of frozen water across the world. Questioning whether the cap is real is unavoidable, and intentional, drawing a link to the uncertain height of the mountain itself. (Video of Everest installation.)

Submission

Roshan Houshmand | Submission | "Submission means Islam in Arabic. This painting was made for a Human Rights exhibition. It refers to the sub-human treatment of women in certain Islamic countries...As an Iranian/American having been raised in the Philippines and Iran; and having spent the majority of my artistic life in Spain and the US, I connect to the diverse patterns of culture in search for a universal truth."

anKo - When is a Threat Not a Threat?

ANKO | When is a Threat Not a Threat? | "Remember those three inert grenades I bought? Here’s what became of the first. I’m modifying them under the common theme of “When is a threat not a threat”. I came up with the idea in planning some public art projects. If you wheat paste or paint, it’s vandalism. Leave a sculpture somewhere and they’ll think it’s a bomb. We all remember what happened with the aquateen hunger force movie promotions, yes? No one wants to get arrested, so these won’t leave the house."

Dan Witz - Killroy Variations

DAN WITZ | Killroy Variations | "During World War II, the saying "Kilroy Was Here!" began to appear as graffiti at home and wherever the American military traveled abroad. Eventually the saying, and the cartoon character that often accompanied it, came to represent America's worldwide presence."

Ed Janzen - Araphat

ED JANZEN | Araphat | "In a world often paralyzed by infantile political discourse, Andy Warhol’s famous multiple-screen print technique, with its candy-coloured American pop vocabulary, can offer us a Western but atypical lens through which to seek new understandings between cultures. We owe it to our world and ourselves to break past ritualized polemic, to search more broadly whenever we consider famous or important personalities of the past. In this series the late Palestinian president, Yasir Arafat, surely one of the most recognizable, iconic faces of the twentieth century, raises his fingers in the victory symbol as he exits a polling booth."
